Quit Vaping Study FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions about participating in the Quit Vaping Study

Do I get paid for the survey taken during the enrollment process?

No. Payments are only sent for follow-up assessments you complete - these include text message questions that will be sent to you every month or so for the next 6 months and two online surveys 1 month and 7 months after you enroll.

Do I get paid for every message I respond to?

No. As part of the study, we will be periodically sending you text messages to ask you about your vaping status. These are sent approximately once a month. Each time you respond to that question via text, we will be sending you a link to redeem for a $5 giftcard of your choice.

How do I update you regarding my vaping status?

As part of the study, we will be periodically sending you text messages to ask you about your vaping status. These are sent approximately once a month. Only responses to these text messages will be recorded for the study.

Will it prompt me when I need to send an update or is it just going to ask periodically?

We will be texting you periodically (approximately once a month) to check in about your progress. You will also receive an email with surveys 1 month and 7 month post enrollment for longer surveys. You do not need to update us about your vaping status outside of these prompts.

How do I get paid?

We will be sending payments to the email address you provided in the first survey you take for study enrollment.

For the text message questions, after you respond to the message, we will be sending you a weblink to redeem your payment via a service called Rybbon, a payment management tool. We will send the email within 24 hours of you responding to the question. Once you click on the link, you can choose from a variety of gift card options to redeem your payment. You will receive $5 for each of these text message question responses.

For the surveys, after you complete the survey online Rybbon will automatically send you an email to redeem your incentive. Again, you can choose from a variety of gift cards to redeem your payments. You will receive $20 for each of these survey completions. You can also receive a bonus of $10 if you complete your survey within 24 hours of the first notice you receive via email - this will be sent to you sent to you in a separate email within 1 business after you complete your survey.

How often should I be texting the number?

You can choose to text us whenever you’d like, although you may not always get a response back from our system as it is an automated program. You will only be paid for responses to prompts we send you specifically asking about your vaping status.

Should I email or text the study if I want to discuss my journey about quitting vaping?

We will reach out to you via email or text periodically to check-in on your vaping status. No need to email or text us!

Can my friends sign up too?

If you have friends who are interested, they can learn about the study and check on their eligibility by going to the study page: https://truthinitiative.org/get-involved/participate-research/quit-vaping-study

Why is my friend who is also in the study having a different experience than me?

Your experience with the study (and the messages you receive) differ based on your random assignment. Once the study is over, you'll have a chance to receive different messages.

I haven’t received a text message from you all in awhile?

You do not need to take any action until you receive a text message from us. Once the study is over, you'll have a chance to receive different/additional messages.

Will you be mailing anything to my home?

We will not be mailing you anything for the study, all of our communications are sent via email, text message, or phone call. Please keep an eye out for text messages and emails from us in the next few weeks to get your feedback about your experience quitting vaping.

What do I do if I have trouble with my payment?

Please send us an email at [email protected] if you are having problems with your payments and we will resolve the issue.
