Bio
Mike Moore was attorney general of Mississippi from 1988 to 2004 and now practices law with his own firm, Mike Moore Law Firm, LLC, in Flowood, Mississippi. Moore received national attention in 1994 when he filed a lawsuit against 13 tobacco companies and made Mississippi the first state to insist that cigarette manufacturers reimburse the state for costs related to treating smoking-related illnesses. The suit resulted in a $4.1 billion settlement for the state. Moore also led the national tobacco litigation effort, which resulted in a $246 billion recovery for 46 states. In addition to large payouts for local governments, the more than $200 billion settlement funded the creation of Truth Initiative.
In 1994, Moore’s fellow attorneys general honored him with the prestigious Wyman Award and named him the most outstanding attorney general in the nation. Moore also served as president of the National Association of Attorneys General. In 1998, the National Law Journal named him “Lawyer of the Year” and Governing Magazine named him “Public Official of the Year.” The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids selected Moore to receive its “Champion Award” in 2003 for a decade of service protecting America’s young people from tobacco addiction. In 2004, he received the Julius Richmond Award, the highest award given by the Harvard School of Public Health.
Moore continues to stay active in tobacco prevention work across the country. He chairs The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, the state’s tobacco prevention program that he founded after the settlement in 1998, serves as chairman of the state’s Tobacco Control Advisory Council and is a board member for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Moore has served on the Truth Initiative board of directors since 2013.
